The aim of this study was to compare the effects of disinfectants on the physical and mechanical properties of improved dental stone and to investigate the possibility of clinical application of new disinfectant. Commercial disinfectants, 1% sodium hypochlorite solution and 2% glutaraldehyde, and a new disinfectant, 0.55% ortho-phthalaldehyde(OPA), were mixed with improved dental stone. Dimensional changes of improved dental stone mixed with each disinfectant were measured by extensometer. Vickers hardness was measured after 24 hours on final setting under the load of 2000 g for 10 seconds. Initial setting time was measured by using 1/4 lb (0.11 kg) gilmore needle and final setting time was measured by using 1 lb (0.45 kg) gilmore needle. OPA showed the lowest dimensional change among all the groups, the highest vickers hardness among the experimental groups and the longest setting time among all the groups. Ortho-phthalaldehyde is considered to be used clinically as disinfectant on improved dental stone due to low dimensional change and high hardness.Dimensional change, Vickers hardness, Setting time, Improved dental stone, Ortho-phthalaldehyde
